Since its founding by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York in 1888, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center has been meeting the health care needs of Yonkers and surrounding communities. With the recent acquisition of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison, the Medical Center is now one of the largest healthcare institutions in Westchester.
In response to new developments in medicine and the needs of the community, Saint Joseph’s has grown dramatically over the years into a modern, progressive medical center. A Nursing Home was built in 1976 to alleviate a critical shortage of nursing home beds. In 1979, a new hospital was built on the site of the 1888 building. The Emergency Department was completely modernized in 1993. In 1994, the new Thomas and Agnes Carvel Foundation Family Health Center opened to meet the community’s growing need for affordable primary care. In 2000, a new multi-tiered, 450-space parking garage was built. In 2004, a major expansion and renovation project resulted in a state-of-the-art Emergency Room and a dedicated Radiology suite was added to expedite diagnosis and treatment and help reduce waiting times. Also in 2004, Saint Joseph’s Radiology Department installed a state-of-the-art Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). The PACS system digitalizes images for efficient storage, transmission and interpretation for instant retrieval and delivery in real time to referring physicians throughout the hospital or in their offices. In 2005, Saint Joseph’s Medical Center opened the “Griffin House”, a low income-housing for frail elders subsidized by Housing for Urban Development (HUD).

The plan will create better patient flow and a seamless integration of all aspects of surgical care. The new operating facilities will help the Hospital retain its high quality medical staff and Columbia surgeons who perform surgery at Lawrence Hospital Center today, as well the recruitment of the next generation of world class surgeons.
